In our corner of Kampala, some families go days without food. Your 15€ donation provides an emergency package – basic, non-perishable food that helps a family get through the hardest days with dignity and hope.
It all started with a call…
Last night, just before bedtime, the phone rang.
A soft voice on the other end: “Is there anything we can eat? We haven’t had anything for two days.”
It was a neighbor – a mother of three – living just a short walk from our home here on the outskirts of Kampala. Her children hadn’t eaten for two days. She had tried to keep them calm, but her voice trembled: “Can we come over?”
We know her. During the COVID lockdowns, she was one of the many who came when Tracy handed out food to families who had nothing left to eat.
Now, years later, hunger has found its way back to her door.
She’s not the only one.
This is why we started the emergency food package project
In our community, many people live day-to-day. If there’s no work today, there’s no food tonight. It’s that simple. And there are no food banks or government support when things go wrong.
We realized that we can’t wait for someone else to fix it. We can’t turn away when a child nearby hasn’t eaten for two days. So we’re starting something small.
Whenever we receive donations, we put together a ready-to-go emergency food package: a bag filled with basics, non-perishable foods that keep well until they’re needed. When hunger shows up, the package is already waiting.
No delays. No red tape. Just food, ready to feed someone who needs it – today.
What’s in the package?
We keep it simple. Always the same items. Always the same price. Food that fills the belly and gives a bit of comfort in a hard moment.
Here’s what every 15€ package includes:
- 5 kg of rice
- 2 kg of maize flour (for posho or porridge)
- 2 kg of dried beans
- 1 kg of sugar
- 1 liter of cooking oil
- One sweet surprise for the kids: chocolate, cookies, something small but special
With this, a family can cook fried rice, rice with beans, posho, porridge… basic meals that are filling, familiar, and easy to prepare with what they already have at home.
It might not sound like much. But when you’re hungry, it’s everything.
Have you ever tried to sleep with an empty stomach?
If you haven’t, I hope you never do.
You lie down, but your body won’t rest. Your stomach groans and cramps. You wrap a cloth around your waist to try to quiet the hunger, but sleep doesn’t come easy.
For kids, it’s worse. They cry, then grow silent, then just stare.
This food doesn’t fix everything. But it calms the stomach. It brings peace back into the home. And it lets people breathe – for just a moment – without the tight grip of hunger.
How we make it work:
No admin costs. No middlemen. Just food.
We don’t have a big office. We’re not an organization with staff and systems. We’re just people living in this community who refuse to look away.
When donations come in, we:
- Buy food in bulk when possible to keep costs low
- Pack standard food packages right here at home
- Store them safely so they’re ready when needed
- Keep a record of who got what and when
Most of the families we support are people we know: neighbors, friends, people we see in the market. But as word spreads (like during COVID), people come from further away. No one is turned away.
We don’t waste. We don’t delay.
Your 15€ goes entirely to the food and packaging. We handle the rest ourselves – buying, packing, storage, record keeping. That’s our contribution. That’s how we make sure your generosity becomes someone else’s survival.
We act when the need is real, and the moment is now. We’re building this project out of our own pockets, love, and time. But we need your support to keep going.
Why this matters so much
We start small, but we start now
We know we’re not changing the whole world. But we’re doing what we can with what we have. In our backyard. In our community. One family at a time. One package at a time.
We know this won’t end poverty. It won’t fix the system. But it keeps someone from going to bed hungry tonight.
Because nobody – really nobody – should have to sleep hungry if we can help it.
It gives a mother or a father a way to feed their children with dignity. It gives a family just enough to get through the week. It brings hope where there was despair.
It gives someone a reason to sleep peacefully tonight: this is what your donation does – no more, no less.
How you can help
One food package costs 15€. That’s all.
That’s what it takes to feed a family for a few days and remind them they’re not forgotten.
You can help by:
- Donating once or regularly
- Sharing this story with friends and family
- Writing a message – we’ll pass it along
- Being a quiet part of something powerful
Every euro you give goes straight to food. Every package goes straight to someone in our neighborhood who truly needs it.
